These HOMEMADE GRAIN-FREE DOG TREATS are easy to make, healthy for your four-legged friend, and they will absolutely LOVE them!
I hope you and your loved ones had a wonderful Christmas!! We had a great time in Kerrville with my sister and her family.
So if you don’t know me or can’t tell by the matching Christmas pajamas from the photo above, I love my dog. A LOT.
She is our four-legged fur-baby and the most perfect angel to walk the earth. (If this is any indication of how much you love your human child, I don’t think I can handle it.)
But really, we love our Ellie to death. We joke that we can’t imagine life before her… she adds SO much joy to our lives! We adopted her in September 2017 from DFW Rescue Me (message me for more information if you are looking to adopt, they are fabulous). She was about 10 months old and had lived with a few families before us so we were so excited to welcome her into our family and give her a forever home.
Ellie is a spunky, full-of-energy mixed breed (we think part Shepherd). She loves tug-of-war, chasing her toys, and can’t live without her two daily walks (spoiled, I know). She also has a affectionate, loving side and gives kisses all the time and loves to snuggle on the couch with us.
More like take over the ENTIRE couch… But who could tell that precious face “no”?
She also spends a LOT of time with me in the kitchen. She loves to just sit there and watch me bake (and wait for crumbs).
Ellie doesn’t get to test many of my baked goods, so I thought I would reward her hard work by making some her some healthy treats. These dog bones are super cute, fun and easy to make, and the ingredients are good for our little pups!
Wheat flour really isn’t the best for our four-legged friends (some dogs have a sensitivity just like humans). So I did some research on coconut flour and there are some really great benefits for dogs…
- Gluten-free
- Low Glycemic Index (high GI foods may contribute to diabetes and weight gain in dogs)
- More protein per serving than other popular flours
- 58 percent fiber, compared to 12.2 percent in whole wheat flour (fiber reduces the absorption of sugar into blood stream and lowers cholesterol)
Ellie loves these treats and I know your pup will too!
Disclaimer: If your dog has special dietary needs, please check with your veterinarian before serving these to your pup. 🙂
Homemade Grain-Free Dog Treats
These HOMEMADE GRAIN-FREE DOG TREATS are easy to make, healthy for your four-legged friend, and they will absolutely LOVE them!
Ingredients
Dog Treats:
- 2 cups coconut flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 can 15 oz. pure pumpkin
- ½ cup peanut butter
- ½ cup coconut oil melted
- 4 eggs
Peanut Butter Drizzle:
- 1/3 cup peanut butter
- 1-2 tablespoons melted coconut oil
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
-
Add eggs to large bowl and beat. Add the remaining ingredients and stir together until a soft dough forms.
-
Place on parchment paper and carefully roll dough out with a rolling pin (you may need to put another piece of parchment paper on top so it doesn’t stick to rolling pin).
-
Cut dough into shapes with cookie cutters and gently transfer to baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
-
Bake for 12 to 18 minutes, or until treats are hard.
-
Remove from oven and cool for 5 minutes on baking sheet. Transfer to cooling rack or parchment paper to cool completely.
-
For peanut butter drizzle, combine melted coconut oil and peanut butter and drizzle over treats (I cut the tip off of a Ziploc bag to drizzle over). Let drizzle harden on treats in the fridge or freezer.
-
Store in airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator up to one week. Store in the freezer for a month.
